FAQs

Yes. As a US citizen or Green Card holder, you are required to file a US tax return every year if your income exceeds the filing threshold, even if you live overseas or pay taxes in another country. The US taxes based on citizenship, not residency.

You may qualify for tax benefits such as the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (FEIE) or Foreign Tax Credit (FTC. These provisions help reduce or eliminate double taxation for Americans earning income abroad.

If you have foreign bank or financial accounts totaling more than $10,000 at any time during the year,
you must file a Foreign Bank Account Report (FBAR), using FinCEN Form 114. This form is separate from your US tax return and is filed electronically with the Treasury Department.

If you have missed filings, you might be eligible for the IRS Streamlined Foreign Offshore Procedures, which allows expats to get caught up without facing penalties, provided the failure to file was nonwillful.
